Cruise Ship Dress Codes, Explained
Modern cruise dress codes are simpler than the rumors — and different on every line. Here's the pattern.

The three levels you'll actually meet
Casual (most nights): resort wear, sundresses, polos, clean jeans on most mainstream lines. Smart casual (specialty restaurants, some evenings): collared shirts, blouses, dresses. Elegant/Chic night (one or two per week on many lines): the invitation — not the obligation — to dress up. Mainstream lines suggest; they rarely police beyond swimwear, shorts at dinner in premium venues, and hats.
How lines differ
Virgin Voyages: no formal night at all. Carnival: 'Cruise Elegant' is relaxed in practice. Royal Caribbean: 'Dress Your Best' nights vary by ship. Celebrity and Princess skew smarter in specialty venues. Holland America still honors gala tradition most faithfully. Luxury tiers (Phase-2 territory for us) tighten expectations further.
The one-outfit solution
One outfit that reads 'smart' — a blazer or elegant layer over dinner basics — covers every mainstream requirement in this catalog. Pack that, dress casual the rest of the week, and ignore the tuxedo folklore.
The CruisePalm verdict
Dress codes are a nudge, not an exam: one smart outfit, no swimwear at dinner, and you're correctly dressed on every ship we match.
